Are you ready to create a stunning website using the Divi theme? In this quick guide, we will walk you through the process of installing Divi on your WordPress website, getting you one step closer to your dream site. Let’s dive in!
Adding the Divi Theme
To begin, locate the Appearance option on the left-hand side of your WordPress dashboard and hover over it. A dropdown menu will appear – select Themes.
Next, click on Add New at the top of the page, and on the following screen, click Upload Theme.
You’ll see an option to Choose File – click it and select the Divi.zip file from your computer. Remember, there’s no need to unzip the file as the full Divi theme files are present inside the compressed folder. Click Install Now and let the installation process run automatically. Once complete, you’ll see a success message. Click Activate to make Divi your active theme.
Organizing Your Themes
While not necessary, it’s good practice to remove any unused free themes that appear, such as Twenty Twenty-One. This will help keep your website clean and secure. Hover over the theme and click the Theme Details button. On the theme detail page, you’ll find a Delete button in the bottom right corner. Click it to confirm the deletion.
Setting Up Your Pages and Menu
Now that Divi is installed and activated, let’s set up your pages and menu structure. You can complete the following steps in any order, but we’ll highlight our recommended process.
First, enable the Divi theme builder. On the left-hand side of your WordPress dashboard, find the Divi option and hover over it. Select Theme Options. In the purple bar under Theme Options, choose Builder >> Advanced and make sure Enable Classic Editor is turned on. Click Save Changes.
Next, create your pages. Find the Pages option on the left-hand side of your WordPress dashboard and select Add New. Alternatively, you can hover over + New on the admin bar at the top of the page and click Page.
Choose a name for your page, starting with the Home page. Enter the name in the Add Title field. After adding the page name, click on the purple button that says Use Divi Builder. This will present you with three options: Build From Scratch, Choose A Premade Layout, or Clone Existing Page.
For now, select Build From Scratch. The Divi Builder will prompt you to add a row for your first section, but you can simply click off the prompt by using the X at the top right corner of the purple box labeled Insert Row. Finally, click the blue Publish button on the right side of the page.
Repeat these instructions for each new page you want to add.
Optimizing Your Website’s Structure
To improve your website’s appearance and search engine visibility, it’s important to set up permalinks and choose a static home page. Let’s take care of these steps now!
First, ensure your permalinks are optimized. Find the Settings option on the left-hand side of your dashboard and select Permalinks. Choose the Post Name option, scroll to the bottom, and click Save Changes. This will make your permalinks match the page titles, resulting in clean and search engine-friendly URLs.
Now, let’s set your home page. Under the Settings option, select Reading. In the Your homepage displays section, choose A Static Page. Next to Homepage, select the page you want to set as your main or home page. This is typically the page you created and named Home or Homepage. Save your changes.
Creating a Navigation Menu
Finally, we’ll set up a navigation menu to appear in the Primary Header of your website. Find the Appearance option on the left-hand side of your dashboard and select Menus. Click on create a new menu and enter your chosen menu name in the Menu Name box. Let’s keep it simple and call it Main Navigation for now. Click Create Menu.
On the left side of the page, you’ll see options to add pages, posts, or custom links to your menu. Click the Pages tab to see a list of all the pages you’ve created. Select the ones you want to include and click Add to Menu. Rearrange the order of the pages as desired. If you want a menu item to be a dropdown, drag it slightly to the right below another menu item. Check the Primary Menu box and click Save Menu. Repeat this process if you want to create a secondary or footer menu.
To view your website’s home page, you can click the house icon next to the URL or site title on the top left of the admin bar.
