Introducing the Affirm Woocommerce Plugin

The Affirm Woocommerce Plugin is a convenient payment method that allows your online store to accept monthly payments for purchases. With this plugin, you have the flexibility to set a minimum and maximum spend for customers to use Affirm as a payment option. You can also choose whether to promote Affirm as a preferred payment method.

Requirements and Setup

To make use of the Affirm Woocommerce Plugin, you need the following:

  • An SSL Certificate for secure transactions.
  • An active Affirm account.
  • Your store currency must be set to either USD or CAD.
  • Customers must have a U.S. or Canada address to see Affirm as an option.

Affirm Enable

To configure the plugin, follow these steps:

  1. Go to WooCommerce > Settings > Payments in your WordPress dashboard.
  2. Select Affirm from the list of available payment methods.
  3. Enable or disable Affirm as per your preference.
  4. Provide a title and description (optional) that will be displayed to customers during the checkout process.
  5. Expand the Affirm Account Settings section.
  6. Enable the Affirm Sandbox if you’re in the development or testing phase. Remember to disable it when you’re ready to go live.
  7. Enter your region.
  8. Ensure that your Affirm account is approved for LIVE mode to work properly.
  9. Enter the Public API Key and Private API Key from your Affirm account.
    • Note: Your Affirm account must be approved for LIVE mode to work.
  10. Choose whether the Language Selector should be based on Site Language or Browser Language. (For the US, select Site Language).
  11. Select the Transaction Mode:
    • Authorize to obtain payment authorization only.
    • Authorize and Capture to obtain authorization and capture the funds.
  12. Enable Partial Capture only if instructed by Affirm support.
  13. Select the Checkout Mode:
    • Modal triggers a pop-up during checkout.
    • Redirect takes the customer offsite to complete the checkout process.
    • Enable/Disable Inline Checkout allows you to display value propositions on the checkout page when Affirm is selected as a payment method.
  14. Enable Inline Checkout to enable inline visibility of value props on the checkout page.
  15. Choose the Cancel Affirm Page:
    • Cart Page – takes the customer back to the cart.
    • Payment Page – takes the customer back to the payment page.
    • Custom URL – takes the customer back to a specific location.
  16. If you select Custom URL as the Cancel Affirm Page, enter the Custom URL in the Permalink/Custom Cancel URL field.
  17. Expand the Affirm Promotional Messaging Settings section.
  18. Use the dropdown menu to access additional settings in the Promo Messaging Settings category:
    • Untick all boxes (recommended if you offer other preferred payment methods).
    • Tick boxes to promote Affirm as a payment method, such as Category Promo Messaging and Product Promo Messaging.
    • Show promotional messaging on the cart page.
  19. Choose an Affirm Color – Blue, Black, or White – for the logo.
  20. Enable the Show Learn More option to display a link in Affirm monthly payment messaging.
  21. Enter your Affirm Promo ID (optional) to display Affirm with different styling, messaging, or loan terms. Contact Affirm for a Promo ID.
  22. Expand the Advanced Settings section.
  23. Set the Order Minimum (optional) and Order Maximum (optional) values.
  24. Enable Debug for troubleshooting purposes, if necessary.
  25. Leave the Enable Enhanced Analytics box unticked.
  26. Enable Display Affirm fee to show Affirm Merchant fees.
  27. Save your changes.

Affirm Advanced Settings

Using Affirm

When checking out with Affirm Sandbox, make sure to use your real name. Trying to use fictional names like “Mister Panda” will result in an error. Affirm’s name filter removes prefixes like “Mister,” so using a regular name should work fine. Additionally, please ensure the following:

  • Use a real cell phone number.
  • Use a real birthday.
  • Use “1234” for the last 4 digits of the SSN.
  • Use “1234” for the pin.

During the checkout process, customers will see the following:

  • Promo messaging in the cart if you have ticked the box for the Cart page.

After a successful payment, under WooCommerce > Orders, each Affirm-paid order will have a transaction number with a link to the Affirm merchant portal. From the order view, you can also prompt Affirm to issue refunds.

Capturing Funds with Affirm

To request multiple captures for an Affirm order, follow these steps:

  1. Download and install the latest version of the Affirm extension from the WooCommerce Extension Store.
  2. Once Affirm is installed and enabled as a payment method, go to WooCommerce settings > Payments, and click Manage next to Affirm.
  3. Check the Enable Partial Capture option.
    • Important: Before making this change, ensure that your account is enabled for Partial Capture by contacting
  4. After saving the change, any orders placed with Affirm will be eligible for multiple captures, as long as the authorized amount is not exceeded within the specified authorization window.
  5. In the Order Details page of WooCommerce Orders, click the Capture button alongside the other order action buttons.

Affirm Capture

  1. Enter the capture amount and click the Capture ${capture_amount} via Affirm button.
  2. Checking the Capture remaining option allows you to capture any remaining authorization funds.

  1. The order status will be “On hold” until all authorized funds have been captured, unless updated otherwise.
  2. Refunds work similarly to fully charged loans. If the loan is partially captured, you can refund any amount up to the captured amount.


If customers encounter an error while attempting to pay via Affirm, ensure the following:

  • Double-check that you have entered the correct keys.
  • Use live (not test) keys when in live mode.

If you wish to customize the placement of the Affirm payment option on custom product and category pages, you can use the following code:

Additionally, make sure to confirm the following:

  • Your site’s currency is set to USD in WooCommerce > Settings > General > Currency.
  • Customers have a U.S.-based billing address to use Affirm.
  • SSL is enabled.
  • Your site is in Live (not Test) mode.

Some errors may be caused by non-standard or poorly-coded themes and JavaScript (JS) issues. Common issues include JavaScript errors on the checkout page or failing to load scripts. Make sure you’re using a properly coded theme and that scripts are loading correctly.
